The Lake District is one of the dozen or so National Parks of England and Wales.
|
The TCC's Club Hut is in Patterdale, at the south end of Ullswater in the Lake District, and about 300 miles (480Km) from London by road. This makes for a drive of about 5 hours once you escape from London, given a relatively free run on the motorways. |

The normal route is via the M6 - then from junction 36 A590 then the A591 to Bowness (Windermere) ... |
|
... and over the Kirkstone Pass (A592). At 1500ft (450 metres), this pass can often be closed in winter. |

When the Kirkstone pass is closed, the alternative route is to use Junction 40 (A66 towards Keswick), and then follow the A592. This route enters Patterdale from the north, down the west side of Ullswater and avoids high ground. It is also possible to take a train to Oxenholme, just outside Kendal (about 40minutes drive from Patterdale), or Windermere, if another member of the club, who is driving to the hut, is willing to do a pick-up from either one. |
