Frequently Asked Questions

  What does TCC stand for?

We are now known as the Tuesday Hillwalking and Climbing Club to reflect the broader nature of our activities in more recent years, although originally it was called the Tuesday Climbing Club. We are a very friendly Club and welcome new members.

  So why Tuesday?

The TCC started life in March 1957 as a spin off from an evening class on Mountaineering. The classes were held in central London on Tuesday evenings. The students formed a club with George Hall, the lecturer, as first Honorary President. Although he is over 90, George is still an active member, one of four founder members who still enjoy the mountains as a current TCC member.

The newly formed TCC continued to meet on Tuesday evenings for social events and has done so right up until 2008 (50 years).

From autumn 2008, however, social meets in central London will be held on a Wednesday as we join forces for lecture evenings with the AAC, ABMSAC, Fell & Rock and Rucksack Clubs.

  When do TCC activities happen?

Away Meets are usually over the week-end, though some may be for two weeks or so. The annual spring trip to Scotland is usually a week and any trip to Europe will generally be for two weeks or so. Members attend these longer meets for as long or as short a time as suits them.

Members in London do, though, use the various climbing walls to climb evenings and week-ends, especially in the Winter - so as not to drop a grade of two through inactivity when the weather and daylight is against rock climbing.

From time to time, meets are organised at London climbing walls such as the indoor walls at Mile End and The Castle, as well as the outdoor wall at West Way.

  What equipment do I need to participate?

For the monthly Social Meets, there's no need for any special equipment - just bring your membership card, if you have one, and some beer money.

For the Away Meets, you will need the following as a minimum:

- waterproof jacket or kagoul;

- pair of sturdy walking boots and thick socks;

- a daysack plus water bottle or flask;

- sleeping bag, pillowcase and overnight things;

- change of clothes;

and food for 2 x lunch, 1 x supper and 2 x breakfast (alternatively, this can all be bought at the local stores). (Check with the meet steward and whoever you are traveling with.)
